Garage Sale History

I didn’t tell you last week when I mentioned my garage sale this weekend, but I also had a garage sale in June. My friend Maddie called it an “Epic Fail”. When Kyle went out of town over Father’s Day to go fishing with his dad, I bought  a few things for our house. Not like a picture frame and a candle… I bought a leather ottoman, lamp, two euro pillows, a decorative bowl and two pieces of art for the bathroom. Yikes, I know. Once I got home with my treasures, the excitement wore off and the guilt of the grand total set in. So, I thought “I’ll just have a garage sale while he’s gone to make up for what I spent and everything will be fine!”

Before I continue, here are a few of the things I bought that weekend that inspired my cover-up garage sale.

Ottoman: TJ Maxx

Green striped Euro Pillows: Marshall’s

Coral artwork: Marshall’s

See why I needed to try and make some fast cash instead of returning what I bought?

Ok, so back to the story. I got the garage sale permit, set up and my stuff, put the sale on Craigslist and opened the garage door for business. Then waited…

and waited…

and waited…

Ahh a customer! She spent $10. Then I waited…

and waited… you get the idea.

No more customers. NONE! I waited four hours and had one person show up. My total cost for the sale was $5 and since I made $10, I came out $5 ahead. That didn’t even cover the cost of the one of the pillows I had bought.

Kyle returned from his fishing trip later that day and I cheerfully showed him around the house giving him a look-what-I-bought-please-don’t-be-mad tour. He gave me a take-it-easy-on-the-debit-card look and said he knew I was going to go crazy with decorating since he was out of town. He knows me too well.

That’s when I whipped out my $5 and told him the garage sale story. He got a kick out that. Not just that I hosted an epic fail garage sale, but that it was an attempt at covering up a weekend of shopping bliss instead of just returning the stuff.

My Epic Fail Garage Sale has gone down in history, but praise the Lord, history did not repeat itself this weekend!  Holla! (that was for you Christyl)

This weekend, I sold almost everything and sent the rest off to Goodwill. Clean garage, money in the “Bedroom Makeover” envelope and I totally redeemed my garage sale reputation. Holla again.

Currently, the bedroom savings are enough to cover the nightstands and dresser!

We have another piece of furniture that we are selling to some friends, so once we add that to the stash we will probably make an IKEA run. Let the translating stick figure instructions begin.

Side note: I saved my signs for my next garage sale. Hopefully being held no sooner than 2014.
